Opposition leader Bobi Wine has issued a strongly worded statement condemning the reported abduction of former Kampala Lord Mayor and lawyer Erias Lukwago, describing the incident as part of what he termed a growing pattern of state-linked intimidation against government critics.
In a statement shared on Monday, Bobi Wine said he had “just learnt of the violent abduction” of Lukwago from his home in Wakaliga, Kampala, earlier in the morning.
He stated that the lawyer was taken by armed men as he prepared to serve court summons linked to a legal matter involving Chief of Defence Forces Muhoozi Kainerugaba.
According to Bobi Wine, Lukwago is a lead counsel in ongoing high-profile legal cases involving opposition figure Dr. Kizza Besigye, including a treason-related matter and another case challenging alleged abduction and torture claims linked to previous incidents.
He further stated that military personnel stormed Lukwago’s residence and whisked him away using what is locally referred to as a “drone,” a term commonly used to describe security vans.
The opposition leader also referenced social media posts he attributed to Muhoozi, in which he claimed the CDF made remarks suggesting Lukwago had been taken to a “basement” and subjected to torture.
These claims have not been independently verified, and no official statement has been issued by security agencies confirming the lawyer’s detention or providing details on his whereabouts.
Bobi Wine called the incident unacceptable and urged the public to resist what he described as escalating impunity. “I call upon all of us to REJECT and RESIST this brazen impunity. UGANDA WILL BE FREE!” he stated.
The reported incident has triggered concern among opposition supporters and human rights advocates, who are demanding urgent clarification from security agencies on Lukwago’s location and legal status.
Family members and associates have also expressed alarm following the early morning raid.
Eyewitness accounts from Wakaliga indicate that armed personnel allegedly surrounded the residence before taking Lukwago away, but these accounts remain unverified by official sources.
