Former Kampala Deputy Lord Mayor Doreen Nyanjura has confirmed that Kampala Lord Mayor Erias Lukwago has been remanded to prison following his appearance before Makindye Chief Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday.
In a brief update shared after the court session, Nyanjura stated that Lukwago will remain in custody until his next court appearance, when his bail application is expected to be heard.
“Counsel Erias Lukwago remanded until Monday, 22nd June. His bail application will be considered then,” she said.
The development follows proceedings in which Lukwago was charged with misprision of treason alongside several co-accused, including Frank Kihehere, Joel Wakayima, Dr Kizza Besigye, and Hajji Obeid Lutale Kamulega.
He is reported to have denied the charge when it was read in court.
The court subsequently ordered that he be held at Luzira Prison pending further hearing, with his defence team immediately moving to seek bail on health grounds.
His lawyers, led by Member of Parliament Medard Lubega Ssegona, had argued for his temporary release, citing concerns over his physical condition following his detention and court appearance.
The case has drawn significant public attention due to the high-profile nature of the accused and the seriousness of the charge.
Supporters and legal observers followed proceedings closely, as security remained tight around the court premises.
With the bail application now set for consideration on June 22, attention has shifted to whether the court will grant Lukwago temporary release or keep him in remand custody as the case proceeds.
