“Deploy All Investigative Resources”: Uganda Law Society Writes to CID’s Magambo Demanding Information on Lukwago’s Whereabouts

The Uganda Law Society (ULS) has demanded an urgent investigation into the alleged abduction of senior advocate Erias Lukwago, saying he was taken from his Wakaliga residence by armed personnel in a manner that raises serious concerns over the safety of legal practitioners in the country.

In a formal communication referenced ULS/464/2026, the ULS Vice President Asiimwe Anthony wrote to the Criminal Investigations Directorate (CID), urging AIGP Tom Magambo to immediately deploy investigative resources to establish Lukwago’s whereabouts and ensure his safe return to his family.

According to the letter, Lukwago was “abducted” during an early morning invasion of his home by officers believed to be from the Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF).

The society further alleged that those involved later made online statements “boasting” about the operation and “glorifying harassment” of a serving officer of the court.

The ULS expressed concern that the incident forms part of what it described as a growing pattern of attacks targeting advocates in the execution of their constitutional duties.

It warned that such actions undermine the independence of the legal profession and the broader justice system.

“The Society has previously notified you of the ubiquity of such attacks against its members in the pursuance of their professional and constitutional duties,” the letter stated.

The ULS further called for the establishment of a dedicated police desk or focal point to handle complaints involving threats, harassment, disappearances, and other security incidents affecting lawyers.

It argued that such a mechanism would strengthen accountability and improve response times in cases involving legal practitioners.

Lukwago, a prominent Kampala-based lawyer and opposition figure, was reportedly taken on Monday morning under unclear circumstances, sparking concern from legal and political circles.

His whereabouts had not been officially confirmed at the time of the ULS statement.
