A fresh war of words has erupted between Uganda’s Chief of Defence Forces, Muhoozi Kainerugaba, and opposition leader Bobi Wine, following the controversial arrest of former Kampala Lord Mayor Erias Lukwago.
The latest exchange unfolded after Bobi Wine strongly criticized Gen Muhoozi over Lukwago’s arrest, accusing the military chief of abusing his authority and tarnishing the image of the Uganda People's Defence Forces (UPDF).
In a strongly worded statement shared online, Bobi Wine described Muhoozi as a leader who had failed to earn respect through merit and accused him of bringing disrepute to the military institution. He further claimed that history would judge both Muhoozi and his father, President Yoweri Museveni, harshly for their actions. GET FULL STORY HERE.
Muhoozi responded a day later with equally sharp remarks, dismissing Bobi Wine’s criticism and challenging the opposition leader to return to Uganda. In his response, the army chief accused Bobi Wine of drug abuse and declared that he would be “waiting” for him when he eventually returns to the country.
The heated exchange comes against the backdrop of growing controversy surrounding Lukwago’s arrest. Reports indicate that the veteran opposition politician and president of the People’s Front for Freedom (PFF) was taken from his home in Wakaliga by security operatives before being moved to an undisclosed location.
Gen Muhoozi later publicly confirmed that he had ordered the operation and subsequently shared photographs of Lukwago on social media, further fueling criticism from opposition supporters and human rights advocates.
Lukwago had reportedly been preparing to serve court summons on Muhoozi in a legal matter linked to alleged threats made against opposition figure Kizza Besigye, adding another layer of political tension to the incident.
The confrontation also highlights the long-standing rivalry between Muhoozi and Bobi Wine, whose relationship has been marked by repeated public clashes and political disagreements.
Bobi Wine has been outside Uganda since March 2026, following the disputed presidential election. While abroad, he has continued to lobby international actors and criticize the Museveni administration, maintaining that his stay overseas is temporary and that he plans to return to Uganda.
