Former Kampala Deputy Lord Mayor Doreen Nyanjura has raised fresh concern over the deteriorating health of opposition lawyer Erias Lukwago, following a visit to him at Murchison Bay Prison in Luzira.

In an update shared after the visit, Nyanjura described Lukwago as “still frail,” revealing that his condition worsened shortly after learning that his bail application had been denied by court.

According to Nyanjura, Lukwago’s blood pressure “shot up again last night” upon receiving news of the ruling, raising fears about his ability to cope with continued detention.

The development comes amid growing scrutiny over the handling of the veteran lawyer’s health while in custody.

She further disclosed that attempts to have prison authorities transfer Lukwago to Mulago National Referral Hospital—reportedly in line with a court directive—had not yet materialised.

Prison officials, she said, insisted they were still operating within the legally permitted 24-hour window to comply with the order.

The delay has intensified concerns among his supporters and legal team, who argue that his medical condition requires urgent and specialised attention outside prison facilities.

Nyanjura also relayed a message of gratitude from Lukwago, who thanked the public for sustained pressure and solidarity.

According to her, Lukwago credited public outcry for his removal from what he described as a poorly ventilated basement detention area.

“He emphasized that if he had stayed in that basement for another day breathing through just a tiny hole for oxygen, he would not have survived,” Nyanjura stated, highlighting the conditions he allegedly endured before being relocated.

The latest update adds a new dimension to Lukwago’s legal battle, which has already attracted political attention following his arrest and subsequent denial of bail over a treason-related charge.

His legal team has consistently cited chronic health issues as grounds for temporary release, but the court ruled that he remains in custody as investigations continue.

With pressure mounting, attention is now shifting to whether authorities will expedite his transfer to Mulago hospital and how his condition will be managed in the coming days.
