Former Kampala Deputy Lord Mayor Doreen Nyanjura has raised concern over the health condition of embattled Kampala Lord Mayor Erias Lukwago, revealing that he suffered a serious blood pressure spike while attending court on Wednesday afternoon.

Nyanjura, who was present during the proceedings linked to Lukwago’s misprision of treason case, said the situation escalated to a critical medical level even as legal arguments continued in court over his detention.

“By court time today, his pressure was reading 200/100, medically speaking, this is a hypertensive crisis that requires urgent attention. With such a scary condition, prosecution still fought his prayer of at least being detained from a health facility!” she stated.

Her remarks have intensified scrutiny over how Lukwago’s health condition was handled during his movement from Kira Police Station, through Makindye Chief Magistrate’s Court, and eventually to Luzira Prison where he was remanded.

Lukwago was earlier in the day taken into custody at Kira Police, where he was reportedly processed before being transferred under heavy security to Makindye Court.

Inside the courtroom, he was formally charged with misprision of treason, a serious offence under Uganda’s Penal Code that relates to failure to report knowledge of alleged treasonable conduct.

He denied the charge through his legal team, who also raised concerns over his physical condition and requested that he be considered for medical supervision rather than immediate prison remand.

However, the prosecution opposed the application, insisting that the case proceeded under normal custodial procedures. The court later ordered that he be remanded to Luzira Prison pending further hearings.

The decision has triggered renewed debate among legal and political actors, with critics questioning whether adequate consideration was given to his reported health emergency during the proceedings.

Nyanjura’s disclosure has added a new layer to the already tense case, with supporters arguing that Lukwago required urgent medical intervention at the time of his detention rather than continued transfer through multiple security facilities.
