Former Kampala Lord Mayor Erias Lukwago has been brought to Makindye Chief Magistrate’s Court in Makindye Division, Kampala, amid heightened political tension and uncertainty over the charges he is expected to face.

Lukwago’s transfer to court came hours after a dramatic standoff at Kira Division Police Station, where supporters, lawyers, and political allies demanded access to him following his reported detention and movement under heavy security.

Details of the case and the charges against him have not yet been disclosed by authorities.

Former Kampala Deputy Lord Mayor Doreen Nyanjura had earlier led a group of supporters at the police station, insisting that they would not leave until Lukwago was either presented to them or formally produced before a court of law.

She accused security agencies of withholding critical information regarding his whereabouts and legal status.

“We have been dispersed but we are not leaving Kira Division Police station until we are allowed to see Salongo Erias Lukwago or at least told which court they are taking him,” Nyanjura said during the standoff, as police attempted to restore order at the facility.

Shortly after, reports emerged indicating that Lukwago had been moved swiftly under security escort to Makindye Magistrates Court.

The confirmation of his appearance before the court later brought clarity to the earlier confusion, though questions remain over the circumstances surrounding his arrest and transfer.

At Makindye, security presence was visibly heightened as officials restricted access to the courtroom area.

Lawyers and family members who had been following the case at Kira were also seen arriving at the court premises, awaiting further communication from the judicial authorities.
