Security operatives have raided the residence of former Ethics and Integrity Minister Miria Matembe in Luzira, Kampala, in an incident that has sparked fresh political debate over state conduct and dissent.

According to Matembe, the operatives arrived at her home at around 10:00am but found only a caretaker.

They reportedly forced entry into the premises, conducted a search that lasted several hours, and left with electronic devices and other unspecified items.

The motive of the operation has not yet been officially communicated by authorities.

The raid comes at a time when Matembe has been increasingly vocal in criticizing the government, particularly over alleged human rights violations.

In recent days, she publicly condemned remarks made by Chief of Defence Forces General Muhoozi Kainerugaba, describing them as “stupid” amid rising public concern over reported abductions and enforced disappearances.

The timing of the operation has drawn scrutiny from political observers and civil society actors, with some linking it to her outspoken stance.

However, government officials had not issued a formal response by the time of publication.

Matembe is a veteran politician with a long history in Uganda’s public service.

She served as a Member of Parliament for several terms and was appointed Minister for Ethics and Integrity under President Yoweri Museveni.

Over time, she distanced herself from the ruling establishment and emerged as one of its most consistent critics.

She has built a reputation for speaking out on governance, women’s rights, and anti-corruption issues.

Even in recent years, Matembe has maintained a strong public voice, frequently raising concerns about what she describes as abuse of power and erosion of democratic principles.

The raid on her home adds to a growing list of incidents involving security agencies and opposition or critical voices in the country.

Human rights groups have previously raised concerns about similar operations, calling for greater transparency and adherence to due process.
