“I Can Do A Lot Worse” — Muhoozi Escalates Remarks After Lukwago Arrest Sparks Outrage

The military chief Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba has intensified controversy surrounding the detention of lawyer and former Kampala Lord Mayor Erias Lukwago, issuing new remarks that have deepened political tension and triggered renewed criticism from opposition figures and legal observers.

The comments come days after Lukwago was picked up by armed personnel in Kampala in an operation that opposition leaders have described as an abduction.

He was later presented before court and charged with misprision of treason, allegations he has denied.

In fresh statements circulated on social media, Muhoozi defended the handling of the case while issuing a warning against public criticism of his actions.

He suggested that the treatment of Lukwago could have been even more severe.

“You were shocked by this… I promise all of you I can do ALOT worse. Don’t try me,” he stated in a post that quickly attracted widespread attention online.

In another highly controversial remark, he appeared to reference Lukwago directly, saying: “The way I am going to break Lukwago to pieces? He was always an idiot!”

The statements have sparked outrage among opposition politicians and civil society actors, who argue that such language from a serving military leader undermines due process and raises concerns about the militarisation of political disputes in Uganda.

Lukwago’s arrest has remained a focal point of national debate, with opposition figures alleging that his detention is linked to his legal work involving politically sensitive cases.

His lawyers have also raised concerns about his treatment and access to legal representation during detention.

Human rights advocates have warned that the tone and content of the military chief’s remarks risk escalating an already tense political environment, especially given his dual role as a senior military commander and a politically influential figure.
