Lawyer Grace Munduru has issued an emotional public statement following confirmation by General Muhoozi Kainerugaba that former Ethics Minister Dr. Miria Matembe has been arrested, in a development that has intensified concern over Uganda’s political climate.

In a message, Munduru expressed anguish over the treatment of Matembe, describing her as a historic figure whose contributions to Uganda’s governance and human rights record are widely acknowledged.

“My heart breaks for Dr. Miria Matembe. A foundational figure of grit and accomplishment, treated like a criminal. How much lower can Uganda sink?” Munduru said.

The remarks come shortly after Muhoozi publicly indicated that Matembe was in custody, appearing to confirm earlier reports that security operatives had been pursuing her following a controversial raid on her Kampala residence.

Munduru’s statement struck both a legal and moral tone, questioning the state’s handling of dissenting voices while invoking faith and resilience amid what she termed a troubling moment for the country.

“No matter the darkness of these times, the LORD is with her just as He was with David, Daniel, and Joseph. Divine justice will prevail. Release her now,” she added.

Matembe, a veteran politician and outspoken government critic, has in recent years positioned herself as a key voice on governance, rule of law, and civil liberties.

Her arrest is likely to raise fresh debate about political tolerance and the limits of state power.
