"Let's Stand With Him" Activist Rallies Ugandans to Fight for Lukwago, Citing His Credible Record in Defending Human Rights

Activist Melvin Masasira has called for nationwide action following the arrest and alleged detention of prominent lawyer Erias Lukwago by the military, warning that the incident signals a deepening erosion of the rule of law in the country.

Lukwago, a well-known opposition figure and legal advocate, was reportedly picked up by military operatives on Monday morning and taken to an undisclosed location.

His detention was later acknowledged by General Muhoozi Kainerugaba, who has in recent days made public statements suggesting Lukwago is being held in a basement facility.

In a statement, Masasira described Lukwago as a consistent defender of constitutionalism who has built a reputation for successfully challenging state actions in court.

He argued that the manner of his arrest—without a court order—raises serious legal and constitutional concerns.

“The man who won in court every single time they came for him was finally taken without a court order,” Masasira stated, suggesting that due process was deliberately bypassed.

Masasira urged Ugandans not to view Lukwago’s detention through a partisan lens, but rather as a broader attack on justice and accountability.

According to him, Lukwago’s legal work has made him a central figure in defending citizens against what he termed as politically motivated charges.

“He has been the lawyer in the room when the bravest Ugandans were dragged before manufactured charges,” Masasira said, adding that Lukwago has consistently insisted on the supremacy of the constitution even under pressure.

The activist warned that failure to respond could set a dangerous precedent for legal practitioners and civil society actors.

He noted that such actions could discourage young lawyers and activists from pursuing justice, fearing retaliation.

“A country that allows a man like this to be abducted and tortured without consequence is sending a message that defending justice is a death sentence,” he cautioned.

Masasira called for sustained public pressure, urging citizens to “make noise” and demand accountability from authorities. He emphasized that the campaign to secure Lukwago’s release should transcend political affiliations.

“We fight for him not because he is perfect or belongs to any party, but because he has dedicated his life to holding power accountable,” he said.
