“Life Is Everything”: Lawyer Eron Kiiza Pleads for Urgent Care for Ailing Erias Lukwago

Fresh concerns have emerged over the health and treatment of detained Kampala Lord Mayor Erias Lukwago, following claims that prison authorities may have delayed complying with a court directive to grant him access to medical care.

Lawyer Eron Kiiza has called for urgent and humane action, expressing hope that Uganda Prisons had finally transferred Lukwago to a medical facility as ordered by court.

In a statement, Kiiza emphasized that Lukwago’s condition appeared serious and required immediate attention from qualified medical professionals.

“Life is everything,” Kiiza stated, urging prison authorities to act with “urgency and compassion” in handling what he described as a “visibly worrisome medical condition.”

His remarks come amid mounting scrutiny over the circumstances surrounding Lukwago’s detention and reported ill health.

Kiiza further alleged that Lukwago was abducted and tortured by military personnel on June 15, raising questions about the state’s conduct and the legality of the arrest.

These claims have not been independently verified by authorities, but they have intensified public debate over the treatment of political figures in custody.

The situation was compounded, according to Kiiza, by a court decision on June 23 to deny Lukwago bail.

He argued that granting bail would have allowed Lukwago to seek specialized medical treatment, potentially abroad, given the severity of his condition.

Instead, Lukwago was remanded in what Kiiza described as a “tortured and ill condition.”
