Detained lawyer and former Kampala Lord Mayor Erias Lukwago is intensifying efforts to secure his release on bail, with his legal team racing against time to meet key court deadlines.
His wife, Zawedde Lubwama, has now disclosed details of the instructions he issued following her visit to him at Luzira Prison.
Speaking after the visit, Lubwama said Lukwago remains focused on the legal process and has directed his lawyers to strictly adhere to procedural timelines.
According to her, the defense team has already begun preparing the necessary documents required to support the bail application.
“He has instructed his lawyers to ensure that all the necessary documents are filed on time,” Lubwama said, signaling urgency in the defense strategy.
She added that the legal team is closely monitoring the prosecution’s actions, particularly regarding any objections filed against the bail request.
Lubwama expressed confidence that the process is on track, noting that if the prosecution has already submitted its objections, the defense will respond promptly.
“We believe that if the prosecution has already submitted its objections to the bail application, our legal team will be able to file a rejoinder by Saturday,” she explained.
The timeline outlined by the defense suggests that the matter could proceed swiftly, with expectations that the court will take up the bail application early next week.
“This will allow the matter to proceed before the trial magistrate on Monday, when we hope the bail application will be considered,” she added.
Lukwago’s detention has drawn attention from sections of the legal fraternity and political observers, with some raising concerns over due process and the speed of judicial proceedings.
However, authorities have maintained that the case is being handled within the confines of the law.
