A new report by Daily Monitor has cast fresh light on the State’s case against veteran opposition figure Kizza Besigye, revealing that senior military officers are expected to play a central role as key witnesses.

The publication indicates that the prosecution plans to rely on at least ten witnesses, most of them drawn from the military establishment, in an effort to link Besigye to alleged subversive activities.

At the centre of the case are claims that the opposition stalwart engaged in actions deemed treasonous, including a purported plot involving a drone attack targeting President Yoweri Museveni.

According to the report, several high-ranking officers, including Major Generals James Birungi, Richard Otto, and Abel Kandiho, are among those expected to provide testimony.

Their involvement signals the weight the State is placing on military intelligence and security assessments to substantiate the accusations.

Besigye, a long-time critic of Museveni’s administration and a recurring presidential contender, has faced multiple arrests and prosecutions over the years.

His supporters have consistently argued that such legal battles are politically motivated, aimed at weakening opposition momentum rather than addressing genuine security threats.

The latest developments add to an already tense political climate in Uganda, where relations between the government and opposition actors remain strained.

On the other hand, government officials maintain that the case is grounded in national security concerns.

They argue that any credible threat to the head of state or the stability of the country must be thoroughly investigated and prosecuted, regardless of the individuals involved.

The report also highlights the complexity of the case, with prosecutors expected to present technical and intelligence-based evidence to support their claims.

This suggests a potentially lengthy legal process that could draw significant public and political attention.
