Kenyan opposition politician and former Justice Minister Martha Karua was on Monday morning reportedly blocked from entering Uganda at Entebbe International Airport, according to lawyer Eron Kizza, in a development linked to the anticipated bail ruling of embattled Kampala Lord Mayor Erias Lukwago.
In a statement shared from Entebbe, Kizza alleged that Karua was detained by immigration authorities without explanation and may face deportation back to Kenya.
He said she had travelled to Uganda to attend and observe court proceedings in the bail application involving Lukwago, which has drawn heightened political and legal attention in Kampala.
“The Ugandan government has blocked Martha Karua from entering Uganda to attend and observe the bail ruling of Erias Lukwago at Entebbe airport this Monday morning (22/06/2026) and are illegally detaining her at the airport in anticipation of possible deportation to Kenya,” Kizza stated.
He further claimed that the move was part of a broader pattern of pressure targeting legal teams associated with opposition figure Dr. Kizza Besigye, arguing that Karua has been involved in his defence representation in Uganda.
Karua, a senior Kenyan legal and political figure known for her regional human rights advocacy, has not yet issued a public statement on the incident by the time of publication.
The development comes amid a tense political atmosphere surrounding Lukwago’s court case, which has attracted local and international attention due to his role as a prominent opposition-aligned figure and long-serving city leader.
