The Executive Director of Akina Mama wa Kiafrika, Eunice Musiime, has reportedly been abducted by military personnel after a raid on her home, according to her lawyer Godwin Toko.
The incident adds to growing concerns over the safety of civil society actors in Uganda following recent security operations linked to former minister Miria Matembe.
In a statement, Toko said armed military men stormed Musiime’s residence earlier, surrounding the premises without providing any explanation for their presence.
He indicated that the operation may be connected to ongoing efforts to locate Matembe, whose whereabouts have raised alarm among activists and political observers.
The lawyer further revealed that Musiime’s offices had been raided days earlier, on Thursday, by military officers reportedly searching for Matembe.
The back-to-back operations, targeting both her workplace and residence, have intensified fears of a coordinated crackdown on individuals perceived to be associated with the former minister.
“Latest development, Eunice Musiime has been abducted by the military men who laid siege to her home earlier,” Toko stated, confirming that she was taken away during the operation.
He added that Sarah Bireete, a known human rights advocate, was also detained in the same incident. Bireete had reportedly gone to check on Musiime after news of the siege emerged.
No official communication has been issued by the Ugandan military or government authorities regarding the arrests or the reasons behind the operations.
The lack of clarity has fueled speculation and drawn criticism from rights groups, who are questioning the legality and transparency of the actions.
Akina Mama wa Kiafrika is a prominent pan-African feminist organization, and Musiime’s abduction is likely to attract regional and international attention.
