Nominated Minister for Foreign Affairs, Adonia Ayebare, has publicly celebrated Chief of Defence Forces Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba on Heroes’ Day, praising his role in national security and recalling a tense moment during the country’s insurgency period.
In a message shared on Monday, Ayebare described Muhoozi as a close associate and commended his commitment to Uganda’s safety, linking his tribute to the national commemoration of Heroes’ Day, which honours individuals who contributed to the country’s liberation struggles and sacrifice.
“This is to wish my Brother and Friend Muhoozi Kainerugaba a very happy Heroes Day and thank him for what he does 24/7 to keep our country safe,” Ayebare stated.
He further recounted a personal experience during the insurgency period, saying he once reached Muhoozi by phone while he was in Soroti under active combat conditions.
“I will never forget when I reached him on phone in Soroti during the insurgency with sounds of bullets flying in the background,” he added.
Heroes’ Day in Uganda is observed annually on June 9 to honour individuals considered national heroes, particularly those linked to the armed struggle that brought the current government into power.
The day also serves as a broader moment of reflection on sacrifice, patriotism, and national service.
Over the years, the commemoration has included both military and civilian figures recognised for their contributions to peace and stability. However, it has also attracted political debate over who qualifies as a “hero” and how national memory is framed.
Ayebare’s remarks add to ongoing public discussions about the role of the military in Uganda’s political and security landscape, with Gen. Muhoozi often positioned as a central figure in both defence and political discourse.
