Former Aruu County Member of Parliament Odonga Otto has questioned the whereabouts of former Ethics and Integrity Minister Dr Miria Matembe, expressing concern over her safety following reports of a security raid at her home in Kampala.

Speaking during an interview on Next Radio Saturday, Otto said he was disturbed by growing reports surrounding Matembe’s alleged disappearance, noting that even her family has been unable to trace her.

“Where is Dr Miria Matembe? If you send me, Otto, to arrest Matembe, I will have to spend two hours thinking about which part of her to hold; she is old,” he said, in remarks that underscored his concern over the handling of elderly political figures in security operations.

He added that the situation had left her husband equally alarmed, saying: “Where is Matembe? The husband is asking the same. It started with Lukwago, now Matembe.”

Concerns after reported security raid

Otto’s comments come amid reports that armed security operatives stormed Matembe’s residence in Luzira earlier this week in what was described as a prolonged search operation.

According to earlier accounts from family sources, the operatives allegedly searched the home and confiscated unspecified items, including electronic devices.

However, no official explanation has been issued by security agencies regarding the purpose of the operation.

Following the incident, Matembe’s family reportedly raised concern after failing to reach her, with her phones said to have gone off shortly after the raid.

Rising political anxiety

Matembe, a long-serving government critic and former minister known for her strong stance on ethics and governance, has in recent weeks been vocal on issues of human rights, enforced disappearances, and alleged abuse of state power.

Her disappearance claims have intensified public debate, especially among political observers who view the developments as part of a broader pattern of increasing pressure on outspoken political figures.

Otto’s reference to Kampala Lord Mayor Erias Lukwago further amplified concerns, linking Matembe’s situation to previous cases involving opposition-aligned leaders who have faced state scrutiny or legal and security challenges.

No official clarification

As of Saturday, no statement had been released by Ugandan security agencies confirming Matembe’s whereabouts or explaining the reported raid.

The lack of official communication has continued to fuel uncertainty, with calls mounting from political actors and civil society figures demanding clarity on her safety.
