Political Analyst Warns of Possible Court Tensions Ahead of Besigye Hearing After Lawsuit Against Muhoozi

A Kampala-based political analyst Wilfred Businge has raised concerns over possible tensions at the High Court ahead of the upcoming hearing in Dr Kizza Besigye’s treason case, now scheduled for June 30, 2026, amid growing political friction linked to a separate legal dispute involving Chief of Defence Forces Gen Muhoozi Kainerugaba.

Businge, commenting on recent developments in the high-profile case, predicted that the courtroom environment could become highly charged following Besigye’s legal action against Muhoozi over alleged threats.

“Just like Gen Kayihura’s so called supporters did in 2016, I expect Gen Muhoozi’s sycophants to mobilize goons to attack the High Court as Dr Besigye’s case against him is heard on June 30, 2026,” Businge stated.

His remarks come at a time when the High Court Criminal Division is preparing for the continuation of proceedings in the treason case involving Besigye and co-accused Obeid Lutale and Denis Oola.

The court recently adjusted its schedule, setting June 30 as the next key hearing date after earlier procedural sessions and pre-trial directions.

Businge further drew parallels with past incidents involving politically charged court appearances, referencing the 2016 unrest during proceedings linked to former Inspector General of Police Gen Kale Kayihura.

He claimed that similar patterns of mobilisation could resurface in the current environment.

“Incidentally, Erias Lukwago survived lynching by Kayihura’s goons when they attacked the Makindye Chief Magistrate’s Court,” he added.

The analyst also highlighted the presence of Kampala Lord Mayor Erias Lukwago on Besigye’s legal defence team, noting that he is expected to play a central role in representing the opposition figure in the case that also intersects with his separate lawsuit against Gen Muhoozi Kainerugaba.

Besigye’s legal team has recently intensified its legal strategy, including filing complaints linked to alleged threats, which they argue undermine the fairness of ongoing proceedings.

The defence has consistently maintained that the charges are politically motivated and that the trial environment requires strict protection of judicial independence.
