The Uganda Law Society (ULS) has escalated pressure on Chief of Defence Forces (CDF) Gen Muhoozi Kainerugaba by issuing a 24-hour ultimatum demanding the immediate release of lawyer and opposition leader Erias Lukwago.
In a strongly-worded protest note released on Monday, the lawyers' body accused security agencies of unlawfully arresting and detaining Lukwago, who is one of the lead defense lawyers representing opposition figure Dr. Kizza Besigye and Hajji Obeid Lutale in an ongoing treason case before the High Court.
The statement, signed by ULS President Isaac Ssemakadde and presented to journalists by ULS Secretary Ssali Babu in Kampala, outlined several demands that the organization says must be addressed within 24 hours.
Among the key demands is the immediate and unconditional release of Lukwago, disclosure of his whereabouts and physical condition, unrestricted access to him by his family and representatives from the Uganda Law Society, and a public assurance from the Uganda People's Defence Forces (UPDF) that lawyers will not be intimidated, arrested, or obstructed while carrying out their professional responsibilities.
