The arrest of People’s Front for Freedom (PFF) president Erias Lukwago has sparked fresh political tension in Uganda, with senior opposition leaders accusing security agencies of targeting him for carrying out his duties as a lawyer.
Speaking at the PFF headquarters in Katonga, the party's Secretary General and spokesperson, Ibrahim Ssemujju Nganda, strongly criticized Chief of Defence Forces (CDF) Gen Muhoozi Kainerugaba following Lukwago’s dramatic arrest from his home in Wakaliga.
According to Ssemujju, lawyers should be allowed to represent their clients without fear of intimidation, harassment, or arrest. He argued that the rule of law requires legal professionals to carry out their responsibilities freely, regardless of the political nature of the cases they handle.
Ssemujju suggested that Lukwago may have been targeted because he was leading a team of lawyers intending to serve court documents on Gen Muhoozi Kainerugaba in relation to a legal matter connected to opposition leader Dr. Kizza Besigye.
"It is bad manners to kidnap a lawyer for doing his work," Ssemujju said while addressing journalists, adding that such actions create fear within the legal profession and raise concerns about respect for judicial processes.GET FULL STORY HERE.
