Human rights lawyer Sarah Bireete has spoken out on the controversial detention of former Ugandan Ethics Minister Miria Matembe, urging the public to refrain from spreading unverified claims as efforts to secure her release intensify.

In a statement issued amid growing public concern, Bireete clarified that the silence from Matembe’s legal and family circles should not be misinterpreted.

She said the restraint was deliberate and rooted in respect for the veteran politician, even as behind-the-scenes efforts continue.

“People should stop exploiting our silence to spread rumors about the events that led to Hon Dr. Matembe’s military detention,” Bireete stated.

“We are quiet out of immense respect for Maama. All our energies and resources are focused on securing her freedom within the 48-hour limit.”

Matembe’s detention follows a dramatic security operation at her Kampala residence last week, where armed operatives reportedly raided her home and seized electronic devices.

Although she was not immediately found at the premises, subsequent reports suggested she had been taken into custody under unclear circumstances, sparking outrage among activists and political observers.

Bireete also took issue with individuals she accused of misrepresenting the Matembe family on social media.

She warned against unauthorized communication, particularly by those claiming to speak on behalf of Matembe’s husband, Nekemia Matembe.

“Young men pretending to be spokespersons of Mr. Nekemia Matembe’s family should have some courtesy to seek his authorization before opening their mouths on social media,” she added.

The lawyer’s remarks come at a time of heightened political tension in Uganda, where critics of the government have increasingly raised concerns about enforced disappearances and military involvement in civilian affairs.

Matembe, a long-time government critic, had recently spoken out on these issues, placing her at the center of a widening national debate.
