Activist Tumuhumbise Norman has issued a forceful warning to the country’s leadership following the alleged abduction of lawyer Erias Lukwago, a development that has intensified debate over governance, accountability, and the conduct of security agencies.
The activist’s remarks come amid public controversy surrounding images circulated online by Chief of Defence Forces Muhoozi Kainerugaba, which appeared to show Lukwago in a basement setting.
The posts have drawn criticism from rights defenders and political observers who say the situation raises serious human rights concerns.
In his statement, Tumuhumbise directed his message to President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni, General Muhoozi, and senior advisor Salim Saleh, warning that continued silence or perceived endorsement of such actions could deepen national divisions.
He said:
“Dear President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni, Gen MK & Gen Salim Saleh, your acts and/or silence about what is happening is putting all of us at risk. Once this country explodes, history, the present & the future will judge you harshly.”
He further cautioned that unchecked developments could have far-reaching consequences for national unity and stability.
“Your acts are dragging our tribe into the bottom ocean from where we will all drown. This country needs to talk,” the statement added.
The remarks reflect growing public anxiety over the handling of opposition figures and the broader political environment. Legal and human rights advocates have continued to demand clarity on Lukwago’s whereabouts and the circumstances surrounding his alleged detention.
Critics argue that the circulation of such images, particularly by senior military officials, risks normalizing intimidation and undermining trust in state institutions. Government supporters, however, maintain that security operations are lawful and necessary for maintaining order.
