A rare public disagreement has emerged within Uganda's political establishment after former government spokesperson and Member of Parliament representing Older Persons, Ofwono Opondo, strongly criticized Chief of Defence Forces (CDF) Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba over controversial social media posts showing opposition lawyer and Kampala Lord Mayor Erias Lukwago following his reported detention.

Writing in his weekend column published in the New Vision, Opondo argued that public officials should exercise restraint and avoid actions that could undermine public confidence in state institutions and the rule of law.

His comments followed the circulation of images shared online by Muhoozi that allegedly showed Lukwago while in detention. The photographs generated widespread debate, with lawyers, politicians, and human rights advocates raising concerns about the treatment of detainees and respect for constitutional rights.
