National Unity Platform (NUP) president Bobi Wine has condemned the killing of rugby player Sydney Gongodyo, describing the incident as “cruel” and deeply disturbing, following reports that the national team star died after a mob attack in Kampala.
Gongodyo, a Uganda Rugby Cranes player and a member of the Stanbic Black Pirates, was reportedly attacked in Masulira Zone, Bukoto I Parish, Nakawa Division, on Friday afternoon before succumbing to his injuries.
Police have since classified the incident as a case of mob action murder, with investigations ongoing.
In a statement shared on his social media platforms, Bobi Wine expressed shock at the circumstances surrounding the athlete’s death, noting the pain of losing a national sports figure in such a violent manner.
“What a cruel world! To imagine that such a talent — a star who proudly flew our national flag with the Uganda Rugby Cranes — fell at the hands of a mob is as alarming as it is devastating,” he stated.
He further called for accountability and justice for the slain sportsman, urging authorities to ensure those responsible are brought to book.
“We all hope that there will be justice for this heinous crime,” he added.
Bobi Wine also extended condolences to the bereaved family and the wider sporting community, acknowledging Gongodyo’s contribution to Ugandan rugby and his role in inspiring fans across the country.
“Deepest condolences to his family, the Rugby fraternity, and every fan who cheered him on. May the Almighty grant infinite strength to his loved ones during this dark time,” the statement read.
The Uganda Rugby Union has also expressed grief over Gongodyo’s death, with reports indicating that fixtures involving his club were postponed following the incident. Police say several suspects are in custody as investigations continue into the events that led to the fatal attack.
Authorities have urged the public to refrain from mob justice and to allow due legal process in handling disputes, as concern grows over rising cases of vigilante violence in parts of the country.
The death of Gongodyo has sparked widespread outrage, with calls for stricter enforcement of law and order to prevent similar tragedies.
