NUP Signs Forum MoU Amid Legal Challenge to New Political Parties Law

The National Unity Platform (NUP) has announced that it has signed the current Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) under the National Consultative Forum (NCF), even as it continues to challenge a recent amendment to the Political Parties and Organisations Act.

In a statement released on Wednesday, the opposition party said Parliament’s recent amendment to the law, which compels all political parties to belong either to the Inter-Party Organisation for Dialogue (IPOD) or the Forum for Non-Represented Political Parties, was passed without proper consultation.

NUP, which serves as the Deputy Chairperson of the NCF, said it had already filed a petition before the Constitutional Court contesting both the content and the process of the amendment.

“Most importantly, no political party was consulted in amending this law, and everyone could see that it was meant to target the National Unity Platform,” the statement read.

The party accused the Electoral Commission of using the new law to “discriminate against and cripple” its operations, saying the move was part of a broader effort to stifle opposition activities ahead of the 2026 elections.

While maintaining its opposition to the amendment, NUP said it had decided to sign the MoU because the law effectively makes all political parties members of the NCF by default.

The party emphasized that this decision does not amount to an endorsement of the controversial law but is a temporary measure taken as it awaits a court ruling.

“We hope and shall be demanding for a quick determination of the Constitutional Petition to guide us on the way forward,” NUP concluded.
