The National Unity Platform (NUP) Secretary General, David Lewis Rubongoya, has said that several detained members of the party remain in high spirits despite what he described as “political persecution” by the government.
Rubongoya made the remarks on Wednesday after visiting party officials and supporters being held at Luzira Upper Prison and Luzira Women’s Prison.
Among those he checked on were NUP Deputy Spokesperson Alex Waiswa Mufumbiro, Bobi Wine’s security aide Eddie Mutwe, Achileo Kivumbi, Bobi Young, Bobi Giant, Saudah Madaada, and Kaija Doreen.
According to Rubongoya, the detainees expressed gratitude to Ugandans and NUP supporters who continue to demand their release.
He said they remain strong and defiant, believing that their detention is politically motivated rather than based on any criminal conduct.
“They appreciate you all for continuing to demand for their freedom. They are very strong, knowing that their present persecution is not on account of committing any offence but born out of the regime's fear of their work and effort,” Rubongoya posted on X.
The detained group is part of a larger number of NUP activists who have faced arrests over the past months, often linked to their participation in party activities and mobilization efforts.
The opposition party, led by Robert Kyagulanyi, alias Bobi Wine, has repeatedly accused President Yoweri Museveni’s government of targeting its members to suppress dissent.
NUP leaders have vowed to continue pressing for the release of all detained supporters, calling their imprisonment an attempt to silence voices of change.
