The Uganda Electoral Commission (EC) convened a critical meeting on Monday with agents representing all eight presidential candidates, alongside senior officials from the Uganda Police, to review the first week of the ongoing campaigns.
Julius Mucunguzi, spokesperson for the EC, said the meeting focused on assessing emerging issues, addressing complaints, and reinforcing measures to guarantee that the campaign period remains peaceful and orderly.
“The meeting provided a platform to hear from all stakeholders, review how the first week of campaigns has gone, and collectively agree on how to ensure that the campaigns continue to be peaceful, following the agreed harmonized programme, guidelines, and relevant laws,” Mucunguzi stated.
According to Mucunguzi, all parties reaffirmed their commitment to resolving disputes and challenges through dialogue rather than confrontation.
The meeting also sought to identify and settle any outstanding issues that could potentially disrupt the campaign process.
The Electoral Commission emphasized the importance of adherence to the harmonized campaign schedule, as well as respect for electoral laws and regulations.
The move comes amid heightened political activity as candidates engage voters ahead of the upcoming general election.
Police representatives at the meeting underscored their role in providing security while facilitating lawful campaign activities.
Both the EC and Police urged political agents and candidates to promote a culture of tolerance and civility during public rallies and engagements
The EC has promised to continue monitoring campaign activities and convene similar meetings whenever necessary to preempt conflicts and misunderstandings.
