The Uganda Electoral Commission (EC) has issued a stern warning to the public regarding the circulation of false information following last week’s Thursday elections.

In a statement shared on X, the commission urged Ugandans to remain vigilant against staged videos, photographs, and other fabricated content that are being deliberately circulated on social media platforms.

The commission highlighted that unscrupulous individuals are attempting to manipulate public perception by spreading misleading material, which could inflame tensions and create confusion around the election process.

Citizens were strongly advised to verify all information before sharing online to prevent the spread of misinformation and avoid legal repercussions under computer misuse laws.

“The public should beware of staged or manufactured fabrications of videos, photographs or any other content about the ongoing elections,” the statement read.

“Verify before sharing anything you see online to avoid misleading and misinforming people and falling victim to computer misuse offences.”

The EC emphasized that spreading false information not only undermines the integrity of the electoral process but may also expose individuals to prosecution.

The commission reiterated its commitment to conducting transparent and credible elections and encouraged citizens to rely on official sources for updates on results and announcements.

Authorities continue to monitor online activity and have promised swift action against those involved in creating or distributing fabricated election content.

This alert comes as Ugandans await the official declaration of results, with the EC stressing that verified updates will only come through authorized communication channels.
