Speaker of Parliament Anita Among is facing renewed public scrutiny after details emerged about the cost of a designer outfit she wore during President Yoweri Museveni’s recent swearing-in ceremony.
The latest concerns were raised by journalist Remmy Bahati, who publicly broke down the price of the attire, placing it at more than UGX 42 million.
In her remarks, Bahati identified the outfit as a luxury design from Oscar de la Renta, a globally recognised fashion house known for high-end pieces often worn by political and cultural elites.
“Anita Among’s UGX 42M designer outfit… the Speaker attended President Museveni’s swearing-in ceremony wearing an Oscar de la Renta porcelain flower embroidered designer outfit,” Bahati stated.
She further detailed the pricing of each item, noting that the dress alone costs $6,490, while the matching embroidered jacket is listed at $4,990.
“The outfit includes a dress priced at $6,490 USD, approximately UGX 24 million, and a matching embroidered jacket listed at $4,990 USD, approximately UGX 18.5 million,” she added.
“Combined, the outfit is valued at $11,480 USD before taxes, roughly UGX 42.5 million.”
The revelations come just days after Among had already drawn attention over reports linking her to the purchase of a Rolls-Royce vehicle worth billions of shillings, further intensifying scrutiny of her lifestyle.
The development has triggered mixed reactions, particularly online, where some Ugandans questioned the message such displays send at a time when many citizens are struggling with the rising cost of living.
