Media personality and socialite Sheilah Gashumba has stirred fresh debate online after weighing in on the ongoing corruption investigations surrounding Parliament Speaker Anita Among, offering a controversial mix of admiration and criticism.
Gashumba, known for her outspoken social media presence, appeared to separate the allegations facing Among from her personal lifestyle, praising the Speaker’s fashion sense, home design, and luxury car collection.
Her remarks come at a time when investigators in Uganda are intensifying probes into alleged illicit wealth linked to Among, including reported property searches and asset scrutiny.
“Everything aside, so many people have money but no class. Anita Among has class,” Gashumba wrote, referencing the Speaker’s high-end wardrobe and luxury vehicles, including a Maybach. She also praised Among’s modern residence in Kigo, describing it as “100/100” in design and execution.
However, the comments quickly took a sharper tone, with Gashumba suggesting that the same display of wealth may have contributed to the scrutiny now facing the Speaker.
“Being too classy landed her in hot problems,” she added, implying that the public display of affluence may have drawn attention from authorities and critics.
The remarks have triggered mixed reactions across social and political circles.
Some users defended Gashumba’s right to comment on lifestyle and aesthetics, while others criticized her for appearing to downplay serious corruption allegations by focusing on luxury and personal taste.
The controversy surrounding Anita Among has grown in recent weeks, with investigators reportedly probing alleged money laundering and unexplained wealth accumulation.
The investigations have also revived earlier concerns linked to international sanctions imposed over corruption-related claims during her tenure in public office.
