Former Speaker of Uganda’s Parliament and second National Vice Chairperson of the National Resistance Movement (NRM), Anita Among, did not attend a high-level Central Executive Committee (CEC) meeting held on Sunday despite being formally invited by President Yoweri Museveni, party sources have confirmed.
The meeting, convened at the NRM top decision-making level, went ahead without her presence and ultimately endorsed Oboth Oboth as Speaker of Parliament and Thomas Tayebwa as Deputy Speaker, marking a significant leadership outcome within the ruling party’s parliamentary direction.
Among, who is one of the 14 members of the CEC and holds a senior position within the party hierarchy, is said to have communicated her absence through the NRM Secretary-General Richard Todwong and the head of the NRM Electoral Commission Tanga Odoi.
According to a close family source, her decision was linked to concerns over her personal security and freedom of movement.
The source claimed that Among felt increasingly constrained in her daily life, alleging that security arrangements had made it difficult for her to operate freely.
It was further suggested that her access to official and personal vehicles had been restricted.
“These people [security] have made it hard for her to live freely. Yes, she was invited, but what car will she use? They took all her cars. She gave Parliament all their cars. There is a threat on her life,” the source said.
The allegations, however, remain unverified and have not been independently confirmed by security agencies or NRM officials.
Among’s absence from the meeting has drawn attention due to her senior role in the ruling party and her close proximity to key decision-making structures.
The CEC session is considered one of the most influential forums within the NRM, shaping leadership positions and strategic direction.
