Former Justice Minister and Democratic Party leader Norbert Mao has received a message of encouragement following his defeat in the race for Speaker of the 12th Parliament.

The election, held at Kololo Ceremonial Grounds, saw West Budama Central MP Jacob Marksons Oboth-Oboth elected Speaker after securing 441 votes.

Paul Mwiru came second with 60 votes, while Mao managed 15 votes in a contest dominated by the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM).

Out of 519 votes cast, three were declared spoilt, with no abstentions recorded. The process was overseen by Chief Justice Flavian Zeija during the first sitting of the 12th Parliament.

Following the outcome, political blogger and PLU supporter Mwesigye Frank addressed Mao in a public message, urging him to remain resilient despite the defeat.

He said:

"Dear Hon. Norbert Mao , leadership is not only measured by victory at the ballot, but also by the courage to stand, compete, and continue serving with dignity even after a setback. Elections come and go, but your contribution, experience, and commitment to national service remain valuable and appreciated by many.

"Loss simply prepares greater opportunities ahead. Stay strong, keep your head high, and continue inspiring those who believe in your vision and leadership. Wishing you strength and greater success in the journey ahead."

Mao, a long-serving opposition figure and party leader, was among the high-profile candidates in the contest but failed to gain traction among MPs who largely backed the NRM-backed candidate.

Oboth-Oboth’s win further strengthens the ruling party’s influence in parliamentary leadership positions as the 12th Parliament begins its term.

Attention now shifts to the election of the Deputy Speaker and formation of key parliamentary committees, which are expected to shape the legislative direction of the new House.
