Lawyer Godwin Toko has narrated the sequence of events that unfolded on Friday as a police officer accused of shooting a female driver near the Speaker’s residence faced court proceedings and formal charges of attempted murder.

According to Toko, the matter that has drawn public attention stems from an incident that occurred on Thursday last week, where a female driver was shot close to the residence of the Speaker.

The case took a major turn when the officer alleged to have fired the shots, identified as Corporal Humphrey Muhanguzi, was formally presented before court.

“Remember the story of a lady shot close to the Speaker’s residence on Thursday last week?” Toko said in his account of the day’s proceedings. “A police officer, Humphrey Muhanguzi was today charged with attempted murder for the shooting. He pleaded ‘not guilty’ and was remanded till the 18th when he will return for a bail ruling.”

Court records and proceedings indicate that Muhanguzi was not represented by a private lawyer at the time of his appearance.

Instead, he was assisted by a legal aid lawyer attached to the Law Development Centre (LDC) Legal Aid Project, who stepped in to represent him during the hearing.

Toko further shared details on the condition of the victim, identified as Annet Kemirembe, stating that she remains hospitalised as she continues to recover from the injuries sustained during the shooting.

He cited information from a source close to the family, who requested anonymity.

“The lady shot is Annet Kemirembe. She remains hospitalised,” Toko stated. “A source from her family who prefer not to be named told me that another bullet was removed from her left hand today, evidence that she was shot more than once. Several bones on her right hand were shattered, and sadly, her disabilities are likely to last a lifetime.”

The allegations surrounding the incident have intensified public interest, particularly given the proximity of the shooting to a high-profile government residence.

However, authorities are yet to conclusively outline the full circumstances that led to the confrontation.

Court proceedings have now shifted focus to the upcoming bail ruling scheduled for the 18th, where the defence and prosecution are expected to make further submissions.

The case remains active as investigations continue into the exact sequence of events that led to the shooting and the extent of responsibility.

For now, both the accused officer and the victim remain central to a case that is still unfolding in court.
