Uganda has declared Tuesday, May 12, 2026 a public holiday ahead of the presidential swearing-in ceremony for President-elect Yoweri Kaguta Museveni, in a move aimed at allowing nationwide participation in the constitutional event.

In a press release issued on Friday, May 8, 2026, the Executive Director of the Uganda Media Centre, Allan Kasujja, confirmed that Museveni will be officially sworn in for the 2026–2031 term during a national ceremony expected to draw senior government officials, diplomats, and invited guests.

Kasujja noted that the declaration of the public holiday was made by the Minister of Public Service in line with preparations for the inauguration, which is considered a major national event marking the transition into a new term of leadership following the January general election.

He added that the announcement forms part of final coordination measures ahead of the ceremony.

The swearing-in ceremony is scheduled to take place in the morning, with government officials indicating that preparations have been finalised across different security and logistical sectors.

The event is expected to bring together political leaders, religious figures, traditional leaders, members of the diplomatic corps, and representatives from various institutions across the country.

Authorities have urged the public to observe the day peacefully and follow official guidelines as Uganda prepares for the inauguration. The announcement effectively signals the final phase of preparations for Museveni’s next term in office.

The government has framed the inauguration as a key constitutional milestone, with nationwide attention expected as the president takes the oath of office for another five-year term.

The Uganda Media Centre said communication channels have been activated to keep the public informed about proceedings and related arrangements.
