Questions have resurfaced over the academic background of former Speaker of Parliament Anita Among, after activist and lawyer Godwin Toko publicly challenged the consistency of her education history, triggering renewed public debate.
Toko, in a detailed public statement, said he had spent several days trying to verify claims that Among holds multiple academic and professional qualifications, but found gaps that he believes require clarification.
His remarks come as the former Speaker continues to face scrutiny linked to corruption investigations following the end of the 11th Parliament.
“Can we now talk about Anita ‘Annet’ Among’s academic record? For the last five years, we were told she is many things: a lawyer, an accountant, sometimes an economist, a former lecturer at MUBS and KIU, that she has Masters Degrees,” Toko said.
He added that despite his efforts, he had not been able to independently confirm that Among attended university, or identify classmates who studied with her.
According to him, there is uncertainty over which institution she may have attended, with varying claims pointing to Makerere University, Makerere University, Kampala International University, Kampala International University, and Makerere University Business School.
“What I gather is way less stellar than that. Two of my sources doubt she has a university degree to begin with. Despite days of digging, I haven't come across a person who attended university with her,” he said, adding that he also could not confirm any teaching record at the mentioned institutions.
Toko further raised concerns about discrepancies in academic documents, noting that different names appear across certificates reportedly linked to her education history.
“What is not in doubt, and was at the centre of a court case after the 2021 elections, is that her O-level papers carry the name ‘Anita Among’, her A-level papers carry ‘Anita Annet Among’. That’s significant. ‘Anita Among’ and ‘Anita Annet Among’ are two different names unless a formal change is proven,” he said.
He also claimed he had not found any legal documentation confirming a formal name change, although these claims remain unverified.
Toko further cited accounts from a politician in Teso who alleged that Among attended Tororo College of Commerce before joining Centenary Bank in an entry-level position that did not require academic qualifications.
He added that even within that account, questions were raised over whether she completed her studies at the institution.
The claims have not been independently verified, and Anita Among has not publicly responded to the latest allegations.
The renewed attention adds another layer to the ongoing scrutiny around the former Speaker, as political and legal pressure continues to mount over her past leadership and pending investigations.
