A large-scale overnight security operation across the Kampala Metropolitan Area has led to the arrest of more than 200 suspects, in what the Uganda Police Force describes as a sustained intelligence-led crackdown on rising urban crime.

The coordinated operation was conducted between 5:00 PM on May 20, 2026, and 5:00 AM on May 21, 2026, targeting multiple hotspots across Kampala, Wakiso, and Mukono districts where authorities say criminal activity had intensified in recent weeks.

Police said the exercise covered Clock Tower, Kinyoro, and Kitende Zone in Makindye Division; Kalerwe in Kawempe Division; KKB Cell, Mutungo, and Kitende Wards in Wakiso District; and Wantoni, Nabuti, and Ngandu in Mukono Central Division.

“Joint security agencies within the Kampala Metropolitan Area conducted intelligence-led operations that resulted in the arrest of over 200 suspects across identified crime-prone areas,” the Uganda Police Force said.

During the raids, officers recovered suspected narcotics, including opium, alongside housebreaking implements believed to be used in theft-related incidents.

Authorities also seized identity cards suspected to belong to third parties and several money transfer cards.

“The exhibits recovered include opium, housebreaking implements, identity cards suspected not to belong to the suspects, and money transfer cards,” police stated.

Security officials linked the operation to growing complaints from residents over drug abuse, mugging, and robberies in densely populated urban settlements.

“The operations followed numerous reports of drug abuse, mugging, and robbery within the affected areas,” the statement added.

All suspects remain in custody as screening continues to determine individual involvement in criminal activity and possible prosecution.

“All suspects are currently in custody pending screening and subsequent court proceedings,” police confirmed.

Authorities further indicated that the crackdown is part of ongoing efforts to dismantle organised criminal networks operating within the metropolitan region.

“Security operations remain ongoing as joint agencies intensify efforts to combat crime and enhance public safety across the Kampala Metropolitan Area,” the police noted.
