Two Ugandan nationals are being held in Kenya after detectives intercepted a consignment of cannabis sativa during a targeted anti-narcotics operation along the Nairobi–Nakuru Highway in Limuru.

The arrest followed a coordinated operation involving officers from the Anti-Narcotics Unit (ANU) and the Transnational Organised Crime Unit (TOCU), who acted on intelligence indicating movement of illegal drugs through the route linking western Kenya to Nairobi.

In a statement, the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) said: “Detectives from the Anti-Narcotics Unit and Transnational Organised Crime Unit have arrested two drug traffickers, seizing a stash of cannabis sativa.”

The agency added that intelligence leads played a key role in tracking the suspects’ movements before the ambush was set up.

“Thanks to intelligence leads about the suspects' illicit activities, the detectives set up an ambush in Limuru along the Nakuru–Nairobi Highway,” the statement read.

Police say the operation targeted a white Toyota Hiace that had been flagged while travelling from Kakamega towards Nairobi. Officers intercepted the vehicle before conducting a search.

“A swift search of the vehicle revealed two black bags, each packed with a bale of cannabis sativa, cleverly wrapped with yellow cellotape,” the DCI said.

The two bags were immediately seized and documented as exhibits. Investigators say the packaging was designed to conceal the contents during transport along major highways frequently used by traffickers.

The occupants of the vehicle were identified as Kiligwajjo Ashirafu and Misanya Suzan, both Ugandan nationals. They were arrested at the scene and taken into custody without resistance.

“The owners of the bags, Kiligwajjo Ashirafu and Misanya Suzan, both Ugandan nationals, were arrested on the spot,” the statement confirmed.

The suspects are currently being held at Muthaiga Police Station, where processing is ongoing ahead of arraignment in court. Authorities also confirmed that the seized narcotics remain under police custody as evidence.
