Uganda Law Society President Isaac Ssemakadde has sharply responded to recent remarks by Chief of Defence Forces General Muhoozi Kainerugaba, escalating a public exchange over corruption, lifestyle choices, and the conduct of top government officials.
The exchange began after General Muhoozi criticised public displays of wealth in leadership, particularly taking issue with Speaker of Parliament Anita Among’s reported acquisition of a Rolls Royce.
In his statement, Muhoozi emphasised integrity in public service and warned against corruption within leadership circles.
“Our job is to SERVE Ugandans not ourselves! I cannot support corruption! I risked my life to make this country peaceful. Now that it is, it will not be taken by thieves. Never!” Muhoozi stated.
He further added: “I have been Mzee's son for 52 years but I have never sat in a Rolls Royce ever. I don't think Mzee has sat in one either.”
His comments triggered a swift and direct response from Ssemakadde, who dismissed the remarks and questioned the lifestyle choices of senior military leadership.
In a statement, he accused Muhoozi of inconsistency in his criticism of luxury and privilege among political leaders.
“This is not it. You travel using helicopters everywhere including to your personal toilets but you feel hurt when the speaker decides to use her ka money to buy a Rolls Royce," Ssemakadde said.
The remarks have intensified public debate in Uganda over accountability, privilege, and the blurred line between public service and personal wealth among high-ranking officials.
While Muhoozi framed his message around anti-corruption and discipline in leadership, Ssemakadde’s response has drawn attention to the cost and optics of state power, particularly the use of military resources by senior officials.
