The detention of opposition politician and lawyer Erias Lukwago has attracted international attention after a major European legal organization formally wrote to President Yoweri Museveni seeking clarification on the circumstances surrounding his arrest and continued detention.
The Council of Bars and Law Societies of Europe (CCBE), an umbrella body representing more than one million lawyers across 46 countries, expressed concern over Lukwago's case in a letter addressed to the Ugandan president. The communication was signed by CCBE President Roman Završek and called on authorities to uphold international standards relating to the protection and independence of legal practitioners.
According to the organization, information available to it suggests that Lukwago was arrested on June 15, 2026, by security personnel who reportedly took him from his residence in Kampala. The body said concerns have been raised regarding the legal basis of his detention and the impact the arrest could have on his professional work as an advocate. GET FULL STORY HERE.
