Minister of State for Youth and Children Affairs Balaam Ateenyi has publicly weighed in on Uganda’s succession debate, expressing strong support for the political prospects of senior military officer Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba, saying he is expected to feature on the presidential ballot in the near future.

In a statement that has added momentum to ongoing political conversations following President Yoweri Museveni’s fresh five-year term after the January elections, Balaam projected confidence in Muhoozi’s leadership credentials and future role in national politics.

“General Muhoozi Kainerugaba will be on the ballot soon. How many of you will vote for him?” Balaam posed, in remarks that have since drawn attention across political circles.

He further outlined what he described as Muhoozi’s leadership qualities, arguing that he embodies attributes necessary for national leadership.

“He possesses the qualities of a great leader—vision, patriotism, courage, discipline, a commitment to national security and unity,” he said.

According to Balaam, supporters of Muhoozi believe his potential leadership could build on the current government’s record while accelerating development priorities.

He suggested that a future administration under Muhoozi could focus on strengthening economic growth and expanding opportunities, particularly for young people.

“Many believe he can consolidate the achievements already made and further boost economic growth, create opportunities for the youth, strengthen security, and advance Uganda’s development agenda,” he added.

The remarks come amid increasing political discussion surrounding succession in Uganda, where President Museveni has remained in power since 1986.

Museveni’s recent swearing-in for another term has once again placed long-term leadership questions at the center of national debate.

Muhoozi, who serves in the Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF), has in recent months drawn attention through public statements and social media posts hinting at political ambitions.

While he has not officially declared his candidacy, his growing visibility in political conversations has intensified speculation about his future role.

Balaam’s comments are likely to deepen debate over Uganda’s political direction, particularly regarding the intersection of military leadership and electoral politics.

Critics of succession politics have often raised concerns about democratic transition, while supporters argue continuity could stabilize ongoing development programs.
