The Chief if Defence Forces Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba has once again stirred political debate after posting messages suggesting he could seek the presidency after his father, President Yoweri Museveni, who recently secured another five-year term following the January elections and subsequent swearing-in.

In a series of posts shared on his social media platforms, Muhoozi directly appealed to Ugandans, testing public sentiment on a possible future bid for the country’s top office.

“Do you Ugandans love me? Will you vote for me if I stand after Mzee? Retweet and Like,” he posted.

In a follow-up message, he appeared more definitive about his political direction, writing: “Thank you for your support. I will definitely follow my great father, Mzee, in the big chair!”

The remarks have intensified long-standing speculation about Muhoozi’s political ambitions, especially given his repeated online commentary on succession politics.

While he has not formally declared a presidential campaign, his statements have often been interpreted as signals of intent to eventually contest for the presidency.

President Museveni, who has ruled Uganda since 1986, was recently sworn in for another term after extending his leadership through the January elections, further cementing his decades-long hold on power.

His administration has consistently maintained that leadership transitions will follow constitutional procedures.

Muhoozi’s posts have renewed political discussion in Uganda, where questions of succession remain sensitive and closely watched.

Supporters view him as a potential continuation of his father’s legacy, while critics argue that succession politics within the same family raises concerns about democratic transition and institutional independence.

The Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF), where Muhoozi has held senior positions, has previously cautioned officers against engaging in partisan political communication.

However, his continued online commentary has kept him at the center of national political discourse.
