“His Ears Are in Pain Following Repeated Slapping in the Basement,” Lukwago’s Wife Reveals Husband’s Suffering After Visiting Him at Luzira

Lawyer Erias Lukwago is experiencing worsening health concerns while in custody ahead of his scheduled bail application on Monday, according to his wife, Zawedde Lubwama, who visited him at the facility.

According to Lubwama, she found him in significant pain, weak, and struggling with complications affecting his ears and general body condition after days in detention.

She said the ear condition has been linked to tinnitus, a disorder associated with exposure to repeated loud noise, which she alleged followed incidents of assault before his transfer to prison.

She added that he continues to experience severe body pains, though he is receiving medical attention within Luzira Prison where prison doctors have attended to him.

The family also confirmed that they were allowed to provide a specialised mattress and deliver food to support his recovery and comfort during detention.

Despite the distress, Zawedde said the visit brought relief after days of uncertainty over his whereabouts, noting that the family is now assured of his location.

Legal representatives are preparing for Monday’s bail hearing, where they are expected to argue for his release on grounds of deteriorating health and alleged mistreatment during detention.

Meanwhile, prison authorities have maintained that all detainees at Luzira receive adequate medical care, including access to doctors and necessary treatment when required.

Medical experts note that tinnitus is a condition often characterised by persistent ringing or buzzing in the ears, which can be aggravated by trauma or prolonged exposure to loud environments.

Zawedde said the family continues to monitor his condition closely and remains hopeful that the upcoming court process will address both his health and legal concerns fairly.

His detention has continued to attract public attention, with rights advocates calling for transparency and adherence to due process as the bail application approaches.

Family members say they will continue visiting him at Luzira Prison to ensure he receives consistent care and support while in custody.

Meanwhile, preparations for Monday’s hearing continue as legal teams finalise documentation and review medical reports ahead of the court appearance in Kampala.
