Veteran journalist and political commentator Charles Onyango-Obbo has strongly criticized a proposed parliamentary reform backed by legislators associated with the Patriotic League of Uganda (PLU), arguing that it could significantly weaken the independence of Uganda’s opposition.

The controversial proposal seeks to alter the process through which the Leader of the Opposition (LoP) is selected. Under the current parliamentary arrangement, the position is nominated by the largest opposition party in Parliament. The proposed reforms, however, would allow opposition and independent Members of Parliament to elect the LoP through a broader voting process.

Supporters of the proposal argue that the current system concentrates too much authority in the hands of a single opposition party and excludes the voices of independent legislators and smaller opposition groups. They believe a voting model would create a more inclusive and representative process. GET FULL STORY HERE.
