Reports circulating in sections of Ugandan media have raised concerns over the alleged deteriorating health of former Speaker of Parliament Anita Annet Among, with claims pointing to a condition that may require urgent and specialised medical attention.
According to the reports, the former Speaker is said to have recently experienced a significant decline in health, prompting private discussions among close associates and political allies about possible medical intervention.
These concerns have now been amplified following remarks by human rights defender Principal D, who claims the matter was recently discussed in a WhatsApp group involving leaders from Northern Uganda, including individuals he described as former beneficiaries and close supporters of Among.
He said members of the group had urged activists and opposition figures to publicly raise the alarm and push for intervention from President Yoweri Museveni and senior government officials.
“I personally told them to whistleblow, we shall speak out but I will not be among those who whistleblow without evidence. View once pictures were sent and it was bad,” Principal D stated, suggesting that some visual material shared within the group indicated a worrying condition, though he did not verify its authenticity.
He further noted that while he welcomed the fact that information about Among’s health was now emerging publicly, he questioned why some politically aligned individuals had remained silent.
According to him, members affiliated with the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM) were unlikely to speak openly due to political pressure.
“You won’t hear the rest speak because they’re NRM and are under worse captivity than us who don’t subscribe to NRM,” he added.
The remarks have triggered renewed online debate over the intersection of health privacy, political allegiance, and public accountability when it involves senior political figures.
At the time of publication, neither Among nor her representatives had issued a public response, and there has been no official confirmation from government authorities regarding the reported health concerns.
Among, a prominent figure in Uganda’s political leadership and former Speaker of Parliament, continues to command influence within ruling party structures, making the claims particularly sensitive within political circles.
