The legal team of opposition figure Dr. Kizza Besigye has signalled a heightened phase in the ongoing treason proceedings, with his lawyer and former Kampala Lord Mayor Erias Lukwago warning of an intensified prosecution strategy expected this week.
In a statement shared on social media, Lukwago said the State is preparing to present senior military officials and additional witnesses in the high-profile case, describing the coming days as particularly demanding for the defence team.
He also referenced continued uncertainty surrounding activist Sam Mugumya, whose whereabouts remain a subject of public discussion.
Lukwago wrote:
“Bracing up for a tough week ahead as the State is lining up top military generals and other witnesses to give testimonies in the Besigye-Lutale treason case while the wild-gooze- search for the whereabouts of Sam Mugumya continues. A blessed weekend to you all dear friends.”
The statement comes as the case continues to draw national and regional attention, with the prosecution expected to escalate its presentation of evidence in court.
The defence team has consistently maintained that the charges are politically motivated, while the State insists the matter is grounded in security-related allegations.
The developments also follow commentary from political actors and observers, including former Kira Municipality MP Ibrahim Ssemujju Nganda, who has been closely tracking the proceedings.
In his post on X, Ssemujju highlighted the court’s schedule and ongoing legal tension surrounding the matter, noting the continued focus on the accused and the broader political implications of the trial.
The case involving Besigye and co-accused Samuel Muyizi Lutale remains one of the most closely watched political trials in Uganda, with both defence and prosecution preparing for what is expected to be a decisive phase in court.
As proceedings continue, attention is now shifting to the anticipated testimony from senior security officials, which legal analysts say could significantly shape the direction of the trial in the coming days.
