Minister for Local Government, Balaam Ateenyi, has lauded the fast-paced construction of the new international stadium in Lira City, describing it as a symbol of the country’s growing ambition in sports development.

In a statement issued after touring the facility, Ateenyi said he was impressed by the speed and scale of progress, noting that the project reflects strong government commitment to improving sports infrastructure across the country.

“This evening, I passed through Lira City and witnessed the remarkable progress made on our new international stadium in record time,” Ateenyi said, highlighting what he termed as a significant milestone in Uganda’s preparations to host major continental competitions.

The minister attributed the progress to the leadership of First Lady and Minister of Education and Sports, Janet Museveni.

He described her as a central figure in driving the country’s sports agenda, particularly through investments aimed at positioning Uganda as a regional hub for international events.

Ateenyi pointed to Uganda’s preparations to co-host the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) and the upcoming All African Games as key indicators of the country’s rising profile in continental sports.

He noted that such infrastructure projects are critical in meeting international standards required to host major tournaments.

“Her steadfast leadership and support for sports infrastructure continue to position Uganda as a destination for major continental events,” he said.

The Lira stadium project is part of a broader government strategy to upgrade sports facilities nationwide, with similar developments underway in other regions.

Officials say these projects are intended not only to support elite sports but also to nurture grassroots talent and boost local economies.

Ateenyi also used the opportunity to publicly commend Museveni’s contribution, describing her efforts as impactful and enduring.

He emphasized that her role extends beyond infrastructure to shaping the future of sports in Uganda.

“Her service, sacrifice, and vision continue to inspire a generation and leave a lasting legacy for our nation,” he added.

The minister further acknowledged the broader leadership within government, linking the developments to a wider vision for national transformation.

He concluded by expressing optimism that the ongoing projects will elevate Uganda’s global standing in sports and create new opportunities for young athletes.

Construction of the Lira International Stadium is expected to continue in the coming months, with authorities maintaining that timelines remain on track ahead of scheduled continental events.
