Uganda’s Chief of Defence Forces Muhoozi Kainerugaba has announced sweeping changes in the leadership structure of the Patriotic League Uganda (PLU), signalling what he describes as a shift toward a “new phase of challenges and priorities” within the movement.
In a statement shared on Monday, Muhoozi confirmed that a new Central Committee for the Patriotic League Uganda will be constituted in the coming months.
He said the current leadership team had fulfilled its mandate and would now be replaced to align with emerging strategic goals.
“In the next few months I will appoint a new membership of the Central Committee of PLU. We achieved what we set out for with the previous team. The new challenges that face us need a fresh team,” he said.
The announcement effectively signals a restructuring of one of the key internal organs of PLU, a political mobilisation platform closely associated with Muhoozi’s growing public influence in Uganda’s political landscape.
However, Muhoozi also confirmed that several figures will retain their positions in the new structure.
He named Michael Nuwagira, Edwin Karugire, MP Michael Mawanda, and political analyst Andrew Mwenda as members who will continue serving on the Central Committee.
“The rest will be announced soon,” he added, leaving room for further adjustments as the reorganisation process unfolds.
The changes are likely to draw attention given PLU’s expanding visibility and its role in shaping discussions around leadership, national direction, and political mobilisation in Uganda.
