Leader of Opposition and Nakawa West MP Joel Ssenyonyi has claimed there is a plan to implicate him in terrorism-related charges, escalating an already tense political standoff involving senior government figures.
In a statement released Friday, Ssenyonyi said he had received information suggesting efforts to link him to an ongoing terrorism case in Butambala or similar court files.
The allegations come just a day after Chief of Defence Forces General Muhoozi Kainerugaba publicly vowed to remove him from his position and have him arrested.
“So, I’m told there is a ploy to potentially add me onto the ‘Terrorism’ file of Butambala, or one of those other files in court,” Ssenyonyi stated.
He framed the alleged move as retaliation for his stance against corruption and governance failures, adding: “When you fight corruption, it fights back. Similarly, when you fight bad governance, it fights back. But we shall overcome.”
The remarks highlight growing friction between opposition leaders and sections of the security establishment, with analysts noting an increasingly confrontational tone in recent political discourse.
General Muhoozi, who has in recent days made a series of controversial statements targeting opposition figures, has not publicly responded to Ssenyonyi’s latest claims.
Opposition allies have expressed concern over what they describe as a pattern of intimidation and judicial harassment. Some argue that the use of serious criminal charges, such as terrorism, risks undermining public trust in legal institutions if perceived as politically motivated.
