Uganda Law Society (ULS) President Isaac K. Ssemakadde has called for the immediate release or court appearance of investigative photojournalist Andrew Natumanya, widely known as Ninye Tabz, following reports of his abduction in Kamwokya, Kampala.

In a social media statement Ssemakadde, described the reported detention as “profoundly disturbing,” raising concerns over what he termed as a continued pattern of enforced disappearances targeting journalists and activists in Uganda.

Tabz, known for his documentation of political events and activities linked to the National Unity Platform (NUP), is said to have been picked up under unclear circumstances.

Ssemakadde questioned the legality of the operation, demanding clarity on whether any charges have been preferred against him or under which authority he is being held.

“Where is he? Under what legal authority was he taken? What charges, if any, does he face?” he posed, urging authorities to either produce Tabz in court or release him without delay.

Ssemakadde acknowledged past personal criticism from the journalist during his own moments of legal and political pressure, noting that Tabz had previously mocked him and other public figures online.

However, he stressed that such grievances must not overshadow constitutional protections.

“As Head of the Bar, my responsibility transcends individual animosities,” he stated, adding that the protection of rights must apply universally, regardless of political alignment or personal history.

He warned that the same state mechanisms allegedly used against him could be used against others, urging solidarity across political divides.

He also committed the Uganda Law Society to pursuing legal protection and advocacy for Tabz, insisting that no citizen should “vanish into the shadows of state power.”

Ssemakadde further appealed to journalists, activists, and supporters of various political formations to recognize the importance of defending civil liberties collectively, cautioning against divisions that weaken accountability efforts.

“To Tabz’s family, know that the Uganda Law Society stands firm against enforced disappearances,” he said, condemning what he termed as a “cowardly act” and calling for respect for due process.

The statement adds to growing concern from civil society actors over alleged abductions of government critics and media practitioners, with renewed calls for transparency, accountability, and adherence to the rule of law.
